How to Save on Medicare Costs

Medicare provides several programs to help you find affordable coverage: Extra Help, Medicare Savings Programs, and Dual Eligibility.

Medicare exists to help cover the cost of medical services but still requires you to pay part of the expenses through premiums, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

Medicare Savings Programs

The Medicare savings programs help pay for some of these costs if you have a limited income. The states administer these programs, so they each have different eligibility requirements.

Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) Program

If you are eligible, the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) Program helps meet Medicare deductible, coinsurance, premium, and some prescription drug expenses. The government contributes a monthly payment toward your Medicare Part A (if applicable) and Medicare Part B.

Specified Low Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB) Program

Another program that can help with the cost of Medicare Part B premiums is the Specified Low Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB).

Qualifying Individual (QI) Program

The Qualifying Individual (QI) Program also helps cover your Medicare Part B premiums. This plan requires you to reapply each year but gives preference to applicants that received the program in the previous year.

Qualifying Disabled and Working Individuals (QDWI) Program

State Medicaid programs help pay for Medicare Part A premiums for disabled beneficiaries under 65 and currently working.

Low-Income Subsidy (Medicare Extra Help)

The Medicare Part D Extra Help Program helps low-income Medicare beneficiaries with the cost of prescription drugs.

If you are enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid or receive Supplemental Security Income, you automatically qualify for the program.

Dual Eligibility Program (Medicare Medicaid Eligibility)

If you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, you are dual-eligible.

Medicare is the federal health insurance that all seniors and disabled individuals can join.

Medicaid is a primarily state-run medical program for low-income residents.

Dual eligible people receive more health care coverage and have lower out-of-pocket expenses.
