Original Medicare Health Insurance

Original Medicare refers to Medicare Parts A and B provided by the federal government.

You can use Original Medicare anywhere in the US that accepts Medicare.

Also, you can customize your coverage by adding a Medicare Supplement. Private insurance companies manage the Medicare supplement programs.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative to Original Medicare. Like supplements, these are handled by private insurance companies.

With Medicare Advantage, you pay the premium to the insurance company instead of the government.

Insurance companies run Medicare Advantage plans, also called Medicare Part C. They include Medicare Parts A and B, and usually Part D (prescription drug coverage) also. You use a Medicare Advantage plan within the network. Typically, you pay higher costs if you receive treatment out-of-network.

Some plans include extra benefits that Original Medicare does not offer, like vision, dental and hearing services.

Finally, some Advantage plans require you to pay as little as $0 per month. To find out if you qualify, contact AARDY for details.

Get Started with Medicare

After Medicare issues your policy and ID cards, you can schedule your Welcome to Medicare Preventative appointment with your doctor during the first 12 months.

Take time to review what else Medicare covers.

Also, make a point to fill out the Authorization Form. This allows Medicare to discuss your health information with a trusted family member or friend if you are incapacitated.

Finally, set up your Medicare account online. You can print an official Medicare ID card, access your personal health information, pay Medicare premiums, view claims, find plans in your area, and create a list of covered drugs.

Do I Qualify for Medicare?

You qualify for Medicare if:

  1. You are age 65 (or within 3 months of turning 65), or
  2. Are under age 65 and disabled, or
  3. Have end-stage kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant

What Medicare Parts Do I Need?

You sign up for Medicare Part A when you turn 65. It provides coverage for hospitalization, skilled nursing care, home health care, and hospice care. Note: It does not cover long term nursing home care, such as custodial care.

Medicare Part B covers doctor's services like regular check-ups, specialists, and surgeons. It also includes preventative care, ambulance services, and durable medical equipment.

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage and some vaccines.

How Much Does Medicare Cost?

Some parts of Medicare require you to pay a monthly premium, and others do not.

Typically, Medicare Part A does not have a monthly fee, but Part B does. However, if you did not work long enough to qualify for $0 Medicare part A, you might pay a monthly amount. Medicare also charges a penalty if you were eligible to sign up but did not register soon enough.

Also, Medicare has out-of-pocket expenses like copays, deductibles, and coinsurance.
